We’ve all heard that fat is bad for you, but all fat isn’t bad fat. Fat is contained within every cell of your body so the good kind is super beneficial. Omega 6 and Omega 3, commonly known as essential fatty acids (EFAs), are A-listed for optimal health because they are mandatory for life! That’s great in all, but what exactly do they have to do with hair; why are these Omegas so “essential”?

1. Omega 6 and Omega 3 nourish our hair, giving it luster, shine, and elasticity.

2. They help optimize bodily functions, such as blood circulation and cell growth, which nourish the hair follicles, promoting a healthy environment for your hair to thrive.

3. They stimulate hair growth. We definitely love this!

Now, here’s the bad, the wary, and the good.

The Bad

Our bodies do not produce Omega 3 and Omega 6; it’s physically impossible to self – produce them. Therefore, we must attain their superpowers from food and supplements so that each living cell is red carpet ready to promote the luxurious hair we all want.

The Wary

It’s very important to balance the amount of Omega 6 and Omega 3 you eat between a 1:1 and 2:1 ratio, respectively. Larger ratios are very damaging your health: when your health is in jeopardy, your hair is in jeopardy.
More than likely, you are one of many overdosing on Omega 6. The American diet is full of processed and fast food; these foods are rich in Omega 6. The current trends are ratios of 10:1, 20:1 and even an alarming 50:1! The more processed food you eat, the more Omega 6 you eat. These high Omega imbalances result in many health issues which take away the nutrients allotted for your hair. The best thing to do is stay out of hair trouble by eating these EFAs within the 1:1 – 2:1 ratio. The balance will give your hair the best opportunity for great growth and glam!

The Good

Eating fish rich in Omega 3’s just twice a week will promote a healthy Omega balance. It’s that simple. There are plenty of sources from which to choose; take a look and pick your vice.
This easy list of Omega 3 food is taken from the The Healthy Skin Diet. As you can see, these fats have more than one health trick up their sleeves; beautiful skin.

Remember your hair is a reflection of your health. Now make sure your hair is happy and EAT THOSE FATS!
