A sister friend stopped by and I commented on how her hair was growing like mad. She explained, that she was using coconut oil and that it was treating her well. I wanted the ”skinny” on how she used it.
- Did she shampoo first, or use on dry hair?
- Did she use a dime size amount, a tablespoon?
- Was it really greasy, and what happened in two or three days?
- Did it leave disgusting gunk?
She patiently answered all of my questions and we headed out to the grocery store so I could make my purchase. I don’t like to wait when I hear about a good thing that is also affordable. I learned that while you can buy coconut oil at holistic spots, the grocery oil isle can meet your coconut oil needs just fine. I found Viva Labs #1 Organic Extra Virgin Coconut Oil – 16 oz. A steal, coconut oil can be used for cooking, conditioning dry skin, and on our hair.
I shampooed, conditioned, and combed through my hair. Afterward I applied the coconut oil to my scalp running it through the length of my hair. I placed my hair in twelve braids and wrapped it in a satin cap for the night. You don’t have to braid, you may opt for twists, and twelve just happened to be the number of braids I ended up with. You can also put on a plastic cap for an hour or so, the same as when you condition after a shampoo.
My first experience with coconut oil was during the winter months. It will run on warm days. It comes out hard in cooler temperatures but as soon as you are in a warm or hot space it softens in the jar and when applied to your hair. The only con was making the mistake of putting too much in my hair before taking a flight. I really jacked up the headrest on the plane. It was a bit embarrassing to have oil running down my neck. You will you need to determine the right amount for your hair type and what you want to accomplish.
All in all, I have had some good results from using it. It has kept my fro and afro puffs well moisturized. I achieve the best results when I use it when my hair is wet. It’s been good for twisting, and while it doesn’t give as much curl definition as a curly pudding,’ it works well enough. Best of all, a little bit goes a long way and that Viva Labs #1 Organic Extra Virgin Coconut Oil – 16 oz lasts for months. I love the fact that coconut oil serves a dual purpose as a moisturizer for both my hair and skin. Definitely worth trying. Good luck!
