One of the most important parts of taking care of our hair whether relaxed or natural is properly protecting it while we sleep. Too often we forego that part of hair care thinking that it isn’t THAT important or even because we’re just too lazy to take the extra steps. But trust me, those few extra steps before bedtime go a LONG way in maintaining the health and retaining the length of your hair.
One of the most important factors is keeping fabrics in your bedroom that cause the least amount of friction against your hair. Typically, the top two fabrics are silk and satin, satin being the least costly of the two. At a loss for how exactly to keep your tresses smooth, tangle-free and moisturized while you sleep? Here are three ways:
- Satin Scarves! They come in a variety of shapes and sizes to cover your hair whether you have a TWA or a full head of flowing hair. Play with the way you secure your scarf to see what works best for you. Too tight and you’ll get a headache. Too loose and it’ll slide off in the night.
- Satin Bonnets! For those who want to do a minimal amount of work when heading to bed, a satin bonnet is perfect. You can pineapple your hair up into a high loose bun/ponytail, pop on the bonnet and be done! Most bonnets have a slightly tighter edge that secures it onto your head with no threat of it slipping off in the night.
- Satin Pillowcases! These work for those who want to do absolutely NO work when it comes to nighttime hair protection and those who don’t like the restrictive feel of tying anything on their head. A quality satin pillowcase is cheap and lasts a lifetime.
With each of these options it is important to assess the moisture needs of your hair nightly and apply your favorite moisturizing cream, oil or butter before going to sleep. Whichever nighttime protective covering you choose will keep the moisture in your hair and keep your strands from breaking and fraying as you sleep.
