I began my natural hair journey in April of 2010. Since that time I have tried so many hair products and accessories that it would make your wig spin.
I nailed down a few staple products that I’ll probably continue using for the rest of my life. That took me about a year and a half. What I haven’t really nailed down is a regimen for washing, conditioning, detangling and moisturizing my hair. I kinda do all of the above when the spirit moves me. Now, the question is: Is that a bad thing? Well, after watching DAYS worth of Natural hair regimen videos and assessing my own hair, I’ve realized that not having a regimen is actually way less detrimental than I originally thought. Let me explain why:
There was a time when I did not care to moisturize my hair even semi-regularly. Maybe the only time I applied any oil, butter or cream to my tresses or scalp was directly after washing it. Then, I would leave my hair to the elements and a lean, mean flat ironing machine until next week’s wash day came around again. SO wrong.
Nowadays? I tried to get with a set hair regimen. I really did. But you know, life gets in the way sometimes. So, I do what I can when I can do it and just protect my hair under a wig or within protective styles in the meantime.
I have experienced so much growth since I’ve just decided to be GOOD to my hair rather than trying to stick to any one regimen. One week I’ll finger detangle everyday and apply my favorite Shea Moisture oil before styling. Another week I’ll two-strand twist my hair with my shea butter and coconut oil mixture, sealing the ends with JBCO (Jamaican Black Castor Oil). Some months I’ll wash my hair every week. Other months I’ll wash once, applying oil to the scalp to alleviate itchiness and dandruff build-up.
Am I against having a strict hair regimen? Absolutely not! I applaud anyone/everyone who can stick to it because I’ve seen amazing results on Youtube and various natural hair care sites. But for me, someone whose schedule is CONSTANTLY changing, what’s important is being gentle with your hair and taking moisturizing seriously, however you choose to do it.
However, if you are interested in adopting a serious hair care regimen, here are two pretty awesome suggestions:
How do you care for your hair? Do you have a set hair regimen?
