Ayurvedic healing is the traditional medicine of South Asia & India, although everywhere else it is considered alternative medicine, or is to be used to complement rather than replace relationships between physicians & their patients. This type of medicine is based on Ayurveda (Ayus – longevity & Veda- related to science) which can be loosely translated to mean the science of life. The foundation of Ayurveda is the metaphysics of the 5 great elements : earth (Prithvi), water (Aap), fire (Tej), air (Vaaju), & ether (Akash) which are said to compose the universe as well as the body.
Ayurveda deals with the measure of a healthy life by how your energies or humors are flowing through your body. These energies are Vata (air & space, or wind), Pitta (Fire & water or bile) & Kapha (water & earth or phlegm). When these energies are in alignment & equal, the body is said to function at its peak. To heal in this form, plant based healing oils (sunflower & sesame) are used, as well as herbs, yoga, acupuncture/marmapuncture, diet, breathing exercises & massages. The range of healing spreads far, creating relief from disorders such as acne, arthritis, insomnia, hypertension, menstrual difficulties, low libido & even impotence.
